So I was going to bottle my oatmeal stout today, and the specific gravity of my brew was 1.020 after 14 days in the primary!! OG was 1.062. I racked to secondary instead of bottling and will see if it ferments any more.

Is this normal when using Wyeast 1084? I made a 1 liter starter 24 hours in advance and there was activity right at 24 hours. It was in my garage the entire time at about 60-68 degrees.

Tasted just fine BTW...

Grain bill below:

Amount Item Type % or IBU
6.00 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 48.00 %
3.00 lb Munich Malt - 10L (10.0 SRM) Grain 24.00 %
1.25 lb Chocolate Malt (350.0 SRM) Grain 10.00 %
1.00 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 8.00 %
1.00 lb Oats, Flaked (1.0 SRM) Grain 8.00 %
0.25 lb Roasted Barley (300.0 SRM) Grain 2.00 %
1.50 oz Williamette [5.50 %] (60 min) Hops 24.2 IBU
1.00 oz Williamette [5.50 %] (30 min) Hops 12.4 IBU
1 Pkgs Irish Ale (Wyeast Labs #1084) Yeast-Ale

Thanks!!

looks fine to me. Mash temp?
I mashed at 154 for 60 minutes. I also toasted the oats at 350 deg for 12 minutes. It tasted great, I am just use to things fermenting down to 1.00x not 1.020.

Thanks!!

1.020 might be as far as that oatmeal will go. You have a lot of unfermentables in that grain bill, so expect a higher finishing gravity. You did not make a mistake by racking, though, and I bet you get at least a couple more points out of it.

I have an oatmeal stout I just kegged a couple days ago that finished at 1.020, OG was 1.070 and I used 1084 as well.

It was the right decision to move it to secondary though, it's better to be safe and give it a chance to ferment out a few more points since you are bottling.

Doubt you will see any movement. Given a 154F mash and the grain bill the FG looks about right.
Chocolate, Caramel and Oats all add to the unfermentables resulting in a fuller beer, which is good for an Oatmeal stout.

Ahoy hoy,
I just bottled one of my batches of porter last night. I used the irish ale yeast, OG w/ temp ajust was 1.069 and FG with temp ajust was 1.029.
But, I tell you it was done doing its thing, and the FG sample was excellent. Im thinking that this may just be normal for this yeast with all the extra goodies in this porter, or stouts for that matter. Or, I could be completely wrong. Even a broken clock is right twice a day :p
FYI
I bid you all a great day
