Strange thought just struck me. Diet Lemonade etc (aspartame based, no sugar) can be picked up at 4 litres for £1 here - would it not be possible to brew a cider stronger than you want it, add some diet pop/soda and some priming sugar to get a slightly sweet carbonated cider?

I'm doubting you'll be able to prime it with the soft drink because of preservatives/acidity. Try it with one bottle or something first..
