I would be leery of purchasing a brew kit off of eBay.

I don't use LME, but be sure to ask the seller what's the expiration date on the can...have the hops been in the freezer or in the box...has the yeast been in the fridge...chances are niether...;)

Problem #2: Dry Ice cannot be shipped to Canada from the USA. Without it, your yeast may get cooked while in transit.

eBay is great for unique items. For food stuffs like homebrew ingredients, I would steer clear of those auctions and purchase direct from a LHBS or a reputable online dealer like..

www.austinhomebrew.com
www.northernbrewer.com
www.morebeer.com
www.williamsbrewing.com

You can't go wrong with these guys and you have some kind of recourse if a shipment goes bad, damage, mistakes, etc.

eBay and PayPal have a reputation of leaving you out to hang.

Thanks EdWort for the site.

By the way apple season is about to start here in Southern Canada (2 to3 weeks). I found a few growers that make apple juice. Can`t wait to start on some Apfelwein.

Where in southern Canada are you, bandit? There are quite a few of us Canucks on these boards so someone may be able to steer you towards a HBS in your area.

A number of us here have also used Alternative Beverage/Homebrew Adventures to buy equipment and supplies (http://www.homebrew.com). They ship to Canada USPS and have very low handling charges. I recommend them, as well as the other retailers Ed recommended.

Other than those American retailers, you are probably noticing that there aren't good places in Canada to turn to for extract-brewing. However, if you are near a Brew-on-Premises establishment, you might check them out and see if they will sell you the ingredients for extract kits. They are almost guaranteed to have fresh stock because they move a lot of product.

Blenheim, Ontario

If you know of any HBS in southern Ontario (Windsor, Chatham-kent, London....etc) let me know.

Don't forget MidWest! http://www.midwestsupplies.com/ They're also great! :rockin:

Hey, I know where Blenheim is. I did my basic training with the reserves in Cedar Springs. :)

Here are a couple HBSes from yellowpages.ca:

Bohemia Brew And Wine
4606 4th Concession Road East RR 2, Harrow, ON N0R 1G0
519-738-2250

Maple City Brewing Company
444 Riverview Drive, Chatham, ON N7M 5J5
519-354-1981
http://myubrew.ca/

There are more in Windsor.

(ETA) I've ordered from Paddock Wood brewing supplies in Saskatchewan for liquid yeast and other goodies I can't get at my wine-dominated LHBS.

I live five min from Cedar Spring.
I`ve been to Maple City Brewing Co. and they only sell the finish beer no extract kits. You place and order of what you want and they make it for you.
I will check in Windsor.

I've ordered from:
http://www.homebrewheaven.com/

http://www.brewsupplies.com/

http://allseasonsnashville.com/

http://www.thegrape.net/

I've been pleased with most of the stuff I've ordered, but shipping can get costly when it comes to extracts/grain/dme. In Canada, I've ordered from

http://www.paddockwood.com/index.php

Shipping was better, but supply is limited to mostly Grain, hops, yeast....not much for extracts. If you find another Canadian site, post it so we Canucks can brew more, and more cheaply!

Boo. Looks like Paddock Wood's future is dim. Too bad for us.

I'm in London, and just preparing to start my first brew. I've been reading up extensively, and am about to go and get some basic equipment. Bandit, any tips on the best HBS in the area?

This is a great site...so much good info and helpful people, it seems.

The only thing i've bought off eBay in the form of ingredients were some hops. I got about 1 pound of various hops that were for the most part, fairly fresh. I've brewed about 5 batches with 'em so far (and the supply is thus dwindling) but i've had no ill issues.

I didn`t check around London but I sure you look in the yellow page and you might find something. I`m thinking of ordering from www.austinhomebrew.com because they have a lot of commercial style beers that I`m interested in brewing. They will ship to Canada but I would order dry yeast as to liquide... Because I think liquide will not make the trip.

If you need some carboys let me know. I have some for sale. They just need cleaning. Info in classified.

Thought I'd post some links I've dug up from Canadian suppliers not mentioned here...as much to put them someplace as anything.

http://www.canadianhomebrewing.ca/shop/index.php
http://www.wineandbeerfactory.com/
http://www.skinaneybrewing.com/
http://www.wortmonger.ca/index.php
http://www.homebrewersretail.com
http://www.beermaking.ca/

Bandit, thanks for the suggestions. I could take you up on a carboy or two, but Blenheim is kinda out of the way for me...and, really, I'm just starting out so I don't need very much. And the wife isn't keen on the space requirements she's thinking this is going to take...regardless of what I try and tell her...

I've poked around to a couple of brew shops in London here, and so far Brewhaven has been decent, but light on some things...but it's close and has a number of kits (apparently). Will pop into one or two others and see...

Hey andy

let me know what street and the name of the shop you find in London that`s the best for DME kits or LME... But not the LME in cans.

thanks

Bandit. Brewhaven seems to have lots of stuff. Hops, DME, LME (in big barrels), kits, equipment. I've been in 2 times and they have always stressed that they can get things in too, given a week or so. I picked up a photocopy of their supplies, but forgot to bring it into work to scan for you. If you PM me your email address I can send it to you directly as a pdf from my photocopier. I got a couple of old 6 gallon carboys from my Uncle and have my first batch bubbling away right now.

Their prices seem ok, they include tax so they seem a bit inflated at first but it's WHSIWYG, price-wise. For instance: 1/2 kg light DME $8. Sounds like you can call ahead, get them to assemble what you want, and maybe make a trip into London to pick it up. Now, you have to weigh that against delivery from Austin right to your door!

BTW, it's http://www.brewhaven.on.ca/, right beside the Brick at Wharncliffe and Southdale Rd.
