I did an extract batch this weekend and didn't think I needed the false bottom. I mean what is it going to catch really? When I bought it I planned on just using it when I do the all-grain mashing.

Anyway...

I was being lazy and just left it in the kettle when I did my full extract boil.

When I emptied all the wort into the fermenter and got every last drop out, I looked into the kettle.

It had trapped all the hop pellet sludge and other stuff on the false bottom.

Sorry, it's my newest addition to my equipment and I find it ROCKS!!!

I have false bottoms in both my MT and BK and my experience has been the same as yours. The BK has the pickup tube in the center, but very little debris gets picked up by it. Most of the trub, hop debris and break material gets caked on top of the FB. It works well with whole hops, pellets or both. I use no other screens or filters between the kettle and the fermenter and I never use a hop bag. Yes, false bottoms rock!
