Last year I planted 4 rhizomes and they all sprouted some bines. I didn't train them or cut them back figuring I'd just let them grow out as they would.

Well, last fall I did not cut the bines back and now the snow has cleared, the plants all have a bunch of dried out bines sticking out all over the place. Should I trim them back now? or wait until I have some sprouts to train? (if I get any) I'm in lower Michigan.

I plan on cutting each plan down to one or two bines this year and training them on a garden trellis and possibly up to my pergola.

I personally would reccommend cutting down all old growth from last year in preparation of the new growth this year. It will be much easier to do it now than waiting until new growth has shown up.
