I have gotten in the habit of using a foam stopper on my yeast starters, but now I have a question, I made a yeast starter using a foam stopper last week and life got in the way so I still have used it,
How long before I should consider it a lost cause?

i am missing the correlation between the foam stopper and the unused starter. Is there a reason to believe a rubber stopper and air lock would provide different results?

Nope, not being a smart-a@@ just asking...

The idea behind the foam stopper is to allow O2 into the starter during the critical stages of cell wall production and budding.

I use a roll of Kerlix bandage. Bad bugs are not mobile so you just need something convoluted enough to keep them from "falling" into the starter.
