I just brewed and extract kit yesterday and the OG range was supossed to be 1.049-1.054. I got 1.040. This is an American Cream Ale.

What causes a low OG and how could it have been corrected? What will the results be with either a high or low OG?

Thanks

The most common problem with OG's and us extract brewers is that when we use top up water it is not thoroughly mixed so we don't get the correct reading. Usually I just go by whatever it should come out to because since we are using extracts we can't miss.

edit: unless we have a boilover.

You may have topped it off with too much water. Did you make sure that ALL of the extract made it into the batch?

Also, what is the temp you are taking the gravity reading at? If your hydrometer is calibrated at 60 deg f, then you must take it at that temp or adjust accordingly.
