I have a bigger beer finishing up right now with an English ale yeast and I really want to make sure I can keep the temp up towards the end of fermentation. My basement is sitting at 66 and I'd like to get it up to about 70.

The beer's in a chest freezer and I have a Johnson analog controller (which I just learned can be adjusted to operate heating equipment). So what's the easiest way to add just a little heat to my fermentation chamber? Lightbulb? I don't have a heating pad or anything, but it's starting to look like I need one...

I think some sort of fermwrap might be in order. The johnson controls unit can do heating or cooling, you just switch a jumper I believe. The fermwrap is sort of like a heating blanket for your carboy. I found a site that shows you how to make your own, although I've never tried it.

You could also just bring it upstairs out of the basement.

What i have done in the past in the winter to keep my chest freezer above freezing is use the same heating method that i do in my snake racks. Its call flex watt heat tape and i believe that it is cheaper than fermwrap. Another plus of flex watt is that you can get it any footage that you want so i have several feet of it taped to the back of the freezer.
