I am deciding on which kit to buy from Northern Brewer's catalog. They only show the OG in the beer's description. Can you figure the aprox ABV by this or do you need the target FG as well?

Thanks guys and GO SOX!

Yes you need both. You could approximate by finding out the typical FG for a style and working it out from there. But, you can also assume that a higher OG beer is going to end up with a higher ABV.

At 75% attenuation (which is reasonably typical for many styles) the ABV is pretty close to the last two digits of the OG. So a 1.050 OG beer that attenuates 75% will be 5.0% ABV, 1.060 will be 6.0%, etc.
