Hello,

I am looking to add one vanilla bean to a 5 gal seconday with 10% ABV beer.

On one occation I touched this bean with my hands. Does that mean that the bean is no longer sterile and will infect my beer if i put it in? Or will the 10% ABV keep the infection in check?

Thanks,
Marius

Many things in my country are sterile when we buy them, but far from all. This particular Vanilla Bean came in a sealed test-tube from the pharmacy and i suppose that tricked me into believing that it was, but I cannot know for sure.

What would you do with it if you were in my shoes?

Marius

I would slice the bean in half, cut it into strips, and soak it in just enough rum, vodka, or whiskey to cover the strips for a week, then dump the entire contents into the secondary.
