Love that place....We took a private tour for my bachelor party, awesome. the barrel rooms are just amazing! Then we hit up The Great Lost Bear...another great place

I was there in July. I could live in the barrel room for months...maybe even years.

I feel like someone just cracked open a bud light and this was the reaction...

Yup it was a blast! We had lunch at The Great Lost Bear before we went to Allagash. Then we went to Novare Res

This is a great area to be in... Maine is my home state... did you go to the other micro brews in the portland area shipyard, gritties mcduff, sabago brewery?

No.. we did not but but are near Boston. So not far away and plan to visit them soon:fro:

I took the same tour (and delicious tasting) a couple summers ago. Also made our way over to, I think, Sabago for lunch. Not so thrilled with the brews we had at Sabago, sadly...

Very cool! I didn't have a chance to swing through there when a few friends and I were in the state last year but we did have a chance to visit Atlantic Brewing Co. in Bar Harbor. It isn't nearly as big as Allagash but it is awesome and the BBQ joint on site is very tasty! I plan on driving up again next year and Allagash is on my list of stops.

(Maine native here) I'm not too enamored with Sebago's brews either. They tend to have some decent seasonal things, but their main lineup is fairly mediocre. Gritty McDuff's down in the Old Port has some good brews (and food), and if you're just looking for suds (and some meat and cheese), Novare Res has the largest selection by far.

Cheers Man! Your right it does look like an upstairs. This video rocks. The perfect beer porn for my monday evening. Paired w/ Founders Backwoods Bastard.

Sweet video. At The Great Pumpkin Festival at the Cambridge Brewing Company this year Allagash tapped "Ghoulship". I didn't get a chance to stick around for the release but they did release 1200 bottles of it on Halloween. Might be worth the ride to Portland.

I was there too.. but sadly left around 8:45. But tried it last year :)
Very good. Did you try the Rumkin from Avery? We were dressed up as the Leg Lamp from X-mas story and the Fragile Box

I did the Allagash tour as well a couple years ago. was a blast! I'm down in York, so its a bit of a drive, but definitely a fun time. If you're in Boston you should try the Redhook tour in Portsmouth, NH. It's a dollar, but you get to taste 4 of the beers and keep the tasting glass for free. Plus you can do a private tour for a minimum group of 15. its 3 dollars a person, but you get to see the whole operation and drink WAAAY more beer.

What about the Great Lostbear?

I LOVE the GLB! their steak and cheese and cheese fries are the best. Plus they always have good beers on tap. my wife, (GF at the time) used to live in portland two streets up from there. I now will take the 45 min drive one way to go there for lunch or dinner every once and a while.

Not a Maine native, but lived in Portland for a few years and it is a great Beer town. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Maine Beer Company. They were brand new when I moved away from Portland but I know they are located almost across the street from Allagash and now they do tours. Geary's is also pretty close, but Shipyard is downtown (right next to a brand new hotel, too)

Sebago is pretty awful in both beer and food. Gritty's isn't amazing but if you are looking for good food and beer for not a huge amount of money it is a great place to go; I'd suggest the Portland over Freeport unless their is a ship in.

Both Great Lost Bear and Novare Res are great, but Great Lost Bear has some pretty good pub food too.

The only thing that may be better than the beer in Portland is the Food. Duckfat, Fore Street, Front Room(Grill/Corner Room), El Rayo, Havana South, Hugo's($$$$).... The list is huge! Man, I need to plan a trip to Portland.

I have to come to the defense of Sebago. Great beer, great food and great service! Gritty's is average at best except for their Pub Mac-N-Cheese!

Last year we did a day of it and did Allagash, Geary (which is almost next door) and then the Tuesday night tour at Shipyard. Allagash is set up really well for the tours. They have a nice bar there where you can wait for the tour to start, DL Geary isn't really set up for it but very relaxed and the tour was given by a brewer. As for Shipyard, make your resevations for Tuesday night tour. It takes about an hour and goes all through the brewery. The regular tour lasts about 5 mins and you can see the bottling machine from 500 feet away, plus the tour is given by a brewer.

shipyard = diacetyl barf

On a cheerier note...
For those of you who can go, the 'new' Allagash is open. It is awesome and HUGE! (and about a 20 min bike ride from my house :)

And a 45 minute ride home lol

as are Geary's and Gritty's as well as all the other Shipyard off-shoots (Seadog, etc.).

Don't get me wrong, a Geary's HSA is a standard for me, but honestly the English-style Ale category is definitely over-done in the Portland area...with the exception of Allagash and Sebago, only recently has the Portland beer scene gotten more depth (Maine beer co., Rising Tide, In'finiti)
