Ok so this is my first shot at brewing without a kit or set recipe, and i wanted to throw together a quick light ale,so I was looking for some confirmation/critique of this recipe:

5 gallon batch

3 lbs exta light DME
2 lbs rice dry extract
6 oz Melanoidin-specialty grain
1 oz Vangard hops, boiled 60 minutes.
Nottingham yeast

Looking to do a 4 gallon boil.

Standard 2-stage fermentation process.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I'd drop the melanoidin and replace it with crystal 40-60 or something similar. I'm pretty sure melanoidin is supposed to be mashed.

If you haven't already, get a trial version of beersmith and input the recipe. It'll give you a good idea of what you will get.

It's a cream ale. It will probably be good. I wouldn't use more than 2 oz melanoidin malt. That small amount will give it a strong malt back bone, much more in a simple beer like this could be overpowering. It should be mashed but you will still get some flavor out of it by steeping. I don't use any crystal malts in cream ales. I want them dry.
