I've got a $100 Jeep part I want to buy but don't have the cash on me. So I borrow $50 from nobody and $50 from anybody. The part was only $97 so I gave nobody and anybody back $1 each and kept $1. So I now owe nobody and anybody $49 each.

So $49(nobody) plus $49(anybody) plus the $1 I kept equals $99.

Where's the other $1?

When you divide the $3 you owe amongst your debtors you end up owing each of them $48.50. +1 to each = 49.50 and +1 to yourself

49.50 * 2 = 99 +1 = 100.

the other dollar was lost due to rounding.

Your accounting sucks. :D

The parts seller kept $97. You kept $1.

That's $98, which is exactly the $49 you own to nobody and the $49 you own to anybody.

You're right... My accounting does suck. I went back and did a T-account exercise and my results match yours exactly.
