Yeast still viable?

I plan on brewing with it this week. Should I make a starter asap?

FWIW, the brew is going to be Dude's honey wheat + watermelon.
 
yes make a starter asap. I would almost bet that it is still good. experation is like a stamped on "Best BY" date. You might have to just step it up a little more since its a little older.
 
What exactly do you mean by step it up a little more?

If I boil 8oz of DME in a 1/2 gal of water and pitch the starter in a gallon jug, would that be about right?
 
I recently revived a vial of WL that expired in early 2007. Used a stirplate setup.

"stepping it up" means starting with a low gravity starter, letting the yeast get going, then adding more starter wort to "ramp" it up and get more cell reproduction.

In your case, try using 2-3oz of extract in a liter of water, then add the remaining 5-6oz in a second addition.
