Is there a problem using isopropyl alcohol to sterilize things like hydrometers and wine thieves before immersing them in the must? This seems it would be more effective and faster than dissolving k-meta and waiting a few minutes for it to dry. Or maybe there are other proprietary sanitizers that people swear by?

I wouldnt use isopropyl . Im sure its fine, but they add a denaturing agent to it so alcoholics dont drink it and it doesnt have to be taxed as alcohol.

For quick santitization, I have a 1.75L bottle of super super cheap Vodka. I think it costs me about $8, and you can re-use it for a time. I make absolutely sure before I use it though that the equipment is squeeky clean. alcohol wont kill everything ... acetobacter can survive an alcohol dunk...
