comparing IBU's

I understand how the bitterness IBU's work but not how to judge the taste.
where would say Sam Adams fall in the scale?
New castle?
stouts?

If you check out the BJCP guidelines, it wll give you IBU ranges for different styles, which might help Many brewery web sites also give this info.

Keep in mind that the perceived bitterness will take nto account other elements besides just IBUs (ie starting and finisheing gravities, different ingredients, alcohol level, water quality, etc.)

And very few people can perceive a difference of less than 10 IBU.
