I picked up a magnetic stirrer today for $5 at the local university surplus store. It works fine now, with the addition of one screw to hold the magnet centered where the rivet broke off. A pretty decent find for the cash. Anyways, I was wondering what kind of stirbar would be best(coating/shape) for use in starters? What speed is recommended and when do you start it? Thanks in advance for the replies.

I prefer to use the hexagonal shaped ones with the raised "rib" in the middle.

As for speed and time, I always have the stir bar in the vessel (sanitize both) before adding the cooled wort. I then spin it on high speed for a minute or two to oxygenate. Then I stop it, add my yeast and turn it up until I have a slight dimple on the top of the liquid.

Hope this helps.

if you're gonna use a flask, my buddy just got his setup and said the 2" bar was too big.
