Heya, brewers.

Looking to make a nice, easy drinking, fairly light American Pale Ale for the warm summer months. Not overly bitter, but with a good hop nose / aroma.

I have plenty of Galena and Mt. Hood hops on hand, so..I would like to use them if possible. Any experience with this combo for a pale ale? Or with Galena as a late addition aroma / flavor hop? Also, no problem to buy an ounce or two of other hops when I pick up the grains at the homebrew shop, if necessary.

Looking for hop advise and recipe advise.

Here's the recipe as of now for comments, suggestions:

I think Galena and Mt Hood will make a nice match. I know FWH will give you a nice bitterness, but I still think you'll want a 60 min addition, even if it's just 10 IBU's taken from somewhere else (maybe half of the FWH Galena addition). I think the crystal and vienna coming in at 16% of the total grist might be a bit maltier than you might want a crisp APA to be. Personally, I would scale back the Vienna a hair. Overall though it's a nice looking recipe. Let us know.

Thanks for the input, JB!

Good call on the the 60 min addition. I think I'll move half of the Galena FWH (1 oz) to 60 min. Leave the Mt. Hood FWH where it is. That give me 9 IBU coming from the 60 min hops.

For the grain, I think I will lower the crystal and vienna to 3 Lbs each. (which takes them to 6% each of the grist) And add those two pounds back in Base malt 2 row. Maybe go with crystal 60 instead of 40, just to darken the brew up slightly. Whattaya think? I am looking for a crisp pale ale.

Probably gonna be a few weeks til I brew again, but will update this thread in a few months after some tasting.

Just wanted to give an update on this very tasty brew.
Brewed July 11, 2009
Kegged August 1, 2009

OG: 1.056
FG: 1.010

This APA was very nice and well received. First keg was drunk at a camping trip Aug 14-16. Another was drunk at a camping trip this last weekend.

The Galena / Mt.Hood hop combo was good. Interesting and different, with a spicy, pine/minty element to it.

Crisp and dry, but not overly so, due to the attenuation. Very easy to drink en masse. No heavy alcohol taste, at 6% ABV. I always prefer a crisp, dry beer for long, heavy drinking sessions, and this fit the bill perfectly.

I eliminated the FWH, and went with hop schedule at: 80 min, 10, and 0.

Went with Galena ONLY as the 80 min bittering, with a mix of galena / mt. hood for the 10, 0, and dry hop.

I also dryhopped with a mix of the two hops (2.5 oz of each).
Ended up boiling for 80 mins, as my boiloff was less than expected in 60 mins. 10 min and 0 min hops were on schedule.

Due to higher than expect pre-boil gravity, I upped all hop additions for balance.
