Northern Brewer hop replacement?

If you are using it for bittering, which seems to be the most common way to use it, you can substitute almost anything. Chinook would be fine. Just adjust the quantity to obtain the same amount of HBUs. For example, if your recipe calls for an ounce of Northern Brewer at 9%AA, then that is 1 ounce times 9 = 9 HBU. If you have Chinook at 12%AA, then you need 9/12 = .75 oz to get 9 HBU.


Edit: I found a couple of Hop substitution charts. The second one is probably more useful because it give the typical usage of the hop.

My first choice would be Perle, a relative of NB that does share some general characteristics. You could also use a clean high-alpha like Magnum. For a British beer try Challenger or Northdown.
