Noticed the BYO article on Stone has a Pale Ale extract recipe with 2-row pale malt included with the specialty grains to steep. I thought all base grains need to be mashed??

Thanks for any insight.

They do need to be mashed [fixed....it said steeped before]. It looks like its only 1/2 pound so maybe no big deal. You'll get something out of it I guess (a steep is just a lazy mash).

EDIT: I tried to link to it, but for those interested, there's a thread here with a scan of the BYO recipe. 'Stone pale ale close reviews'

2-row will give you nothing (well maybe some starch haze) if you don't mash it.

Try steeping the grains in a small amount of water (between 1 and 1.5 quarts per lb of grain), and you will be mashing and convert the starches.
