I just smacked a packet of Wyeast 1084.

Do you think 10-12 hours will be enough for it to activate properly?

I'm hoping to brew tonite after the kids go to bed (10 hours or so from now).

I'll brew a red ale tonite, and pitch a stout on the yeast cake when the red is done. Woohoo!

Is it one of the XL packs?

With those, I take them out of the fridge when I get up in the morning. When I start heating the water for my mash, I go ahead and smack the pack to activate it. By the time the water is heated, the mash done, the sparge done, the boil finished and the wort chilled, the pack is about ready to burst. All that normally only takes about four or five hours. So yea, I think 10 to 12 hours would be OK.

Others will tell you to make a starter. You can go that route to, although it adds a day or so to your preparations.
