Hey guys, quick question. I just got back from a brewery tour at Barley Day's Brewery(Picton Ont.) and they gave me a free 8lb bag of some local malted barley from a farm down the road. They said not to crack it and that it would also be very high in fermentables so to be careful. Before I go ahead with a new batch, Maple Ale, I just wanted to be sure I was hearing things correctly. Any info would help. Thanks guys.

theonly thing i can think of is that they meant not to crack till ready to brew.

not cracking /crushing grains is gonna seriously limit your extraction.

I agree, you shouldn't crush it till the day of or day before brewing.

Also I'm not sure what they meant that it would be very high in fermentables, you might get slightly better efficiency, but all base malted barleys are gonna fall in a fairly small range of extractable fermentables.
