So my wife got me a Masterbuilt electric smoker (30") for Christmas. I cant make up my mind what to smoke first. Brisket is my favorite smoked meat. But should I do something else for my first smoke?

Also, is there a good source for wood chips online?

Thanks!

First time, I would do pork butt or turkey breast. Brisket takes some experience to get it right.

I recommend a pork butt. They are forgiving and produce "splatter" to season the cooker. Not sure if that cooker requires special chips or not. If not Walmart and most grocery stores have chips.

A pork butt is typically recommended for the first smoke in a new smoker, after the initial seasoning of the smoker.

For chips, you could try http://www.charcoalstore.com/ I have no personal experience with them, but guys at the http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/ seem to use them and like them.
Since you have the 30" electric, you may want to check out the AMNPS from http://www.amazenproducts.com. I have the 40" MasterBuilt Electric and have found that using the AMNPS is much easier that constantly refilling the small chip loaders. YOu can 6+ hours of thin blue smoke when using the AMNPS (once you get the airflow set right on your smoker).

Enjoy

I've heard the idea of using used oak cubes in a smoker tossed around here a few times, if you've got any laying around it may add a nice hint to the smoke.

Thanks. Consensus is pork butt, so that us what. ill do. And thanks for the amnps idea!

Pork is more forgiving I believe. Tritip is a great idea now that it has been mentioned.

I would also go for the pork butt, very forgiving.

I buy wood chips often from a number of places, usually Wal-Mart, but often I find pieces of oak or pecan laying in my yard as fallen twigs, and use them.

You can also use hardwood pellets in this smoker. Like Traeger, or Green Mountain Pellets. Cheap at $10.00 a 20# bag here in Montana at least. I use almost exclusively pellets anymore due to the cost savings.
