Pistol Wavin' New Haven, for now...
Another newbie question....... My tap water isn't what I would call "from a mountain spring" It's a combination of my pipes in my old house and the fact that New Haven tap water just isn't great. I use one of the pitcher filters(PUR) for my drinking water and it's fine, the water isn't polluted to begin with it just doesn't taste great. Is the filtered stuff OK for brewing since it's getting boiled or should I just buy bottled stuff?

I'd suggest fitting an inline filter before the tap you use for brewing or fit one after the tap. Next best option if the cost is not an killer is to use bottled.
I'd also try tasting your cooled boiled water, if that tastes good then you could boil it and then use it.

If water tastes crap then it is likely to affect the beers taste.
