I've always used glass carboys because I've had them. I was just offered a bunch of plastic carboys(from water coolers). I've been told that they're ok and also not to use them.
Some tell me it depends on the recycling # on the bottom. What is the general consesus? Will they hurt my cider?
What about the plastic milk bottles?

I've always been a "glass man" but they are getting heavier and more expensive

Plastic bottles that water comes in are food safe obvisously, however...

...they are also oxygen permeable. The plastic better bottles I believe are supposed to be safe oxidation wise but they are made from a different plastic than the run of the mill water cooler bottles. This is one of those "hot button" topics that will probably result in a closed thread so good luck.

Cider sits longer in fermentors I say it is not worth it if you want to make good cider.

If the plastic has recycle numbers on bottom
The ones that I was told by a canning site said ( 3, 6, 7) were the ones to
not use they leach toxic chemicals.
