I gave a liter of Scottish Ale to a neighbor who had a small reaction to it (or something else). It seems that the 'reaction' was slight and did not manifest itself until she returned from a road trip of a couple hundred miles.

It seems to me that, by that time, it could be anything! ??

Wouldn't a 'normal' reaction appear before 20 hours?

How common are allergic reactions to beers? (Not celiacs.)

I'm no doctor, but an allergic reaction taking 20 hours seems like a stretch. I imagine she consumed many other things in that time period. I'd seriously doubt if it was your ale that did her in.

Well, I don't really think it matters. I doubt it's anything poisonos in your beer, as people are allergic to millions of things.

Who knows, it probably was your beer, as at her age (I presume she's at least in her 20s) she would know what she is and isn't allergic to so far and would know what would have caused a reaction. But even still, she could just be allergic to some weird random thing in your beer that unless she drinks crazy kinds of beers besides your typical Coors, Bud, and Miller, she wouldn't have known.

20 hours, I call shenanigans! it wasn't your beer. It was completely metabolized out of her system before she showed any symptoms....

What was the allergic reaction? If it was mild, maybe but 20 hours is stretching it as a possibility. I agree it is more likely to be something else.

If it was mild, she could try "food elimination" to see what it was. So she could try a beer and eat nothing else she had in those 20 hours. If she has the reaction, it's the beer. If she doesn't, it's something else.

If it was severe, she should see a specialist and discuss everything she had that day.

I have several mild food allergies and none of them take that long to kick in. Some people are allergic to hops (after all the resins and oils are poisons developed to prevent critters from eating the cones), but it's rare.

What were her symptoms? You just say she had an allergic reaction, but you don't specify what happened. Was it hives? Was it gastric in nature? Did she suddenly have trouble breathing?

Nothing pathogenic can grow in beer, BUT people can have allergies to beer ingredients, someone could have an allergy to hops, or yeast, or the gluten in the grain, someone could be lactose in tolerant and have gastric issues from a sweet stout.

There's going to be two kinds of reactions, things like hives and respiratory, like a peanut allergy, and someone can get cramps and the runs-which is more like a lactose issue.

But they are going to be pretty immediate, the hives and resp are going to happen within minutes, if not sooner, and the GI would still more than likely happen within an hour maybe 2, but 20 hours, doubtful.

And the thing is, if someone is allergic to most of the beer ingredients then a) then they will be allergic to all beers, even commercial, unless it is yeast, then it would be with SOME commercial beers, that are unfiltered. BUT they would also then be allergic to bread as well. Since the same yeast is used in baking.

The hardest one to figure would be a hop allergy, since except for beer, hops don't really appear in other things. BUT then also, the person would be allergic to other beers as well.

SO I'm going to say it's doubtful that she has an allergy to your beer.

Everytime I drink a 90 schilling my throat swells up. Best cure, benadryl and another different beer.

No peated malt in the beer. And, there are too many other variables to ID this thing. I'm going to have her drink it again w/o taking a trip to the low country next time.

Any idea what specifically is in a 90 schilling that triggers it, that is not in other beers?

No idea, all other Odell beers don't bother me. Only other beer that has ever done that was a draft dos equis and I blame that on skanky keg lines.

I agree, definitely not the beer. I get a mild reaction from melons (mostly musk, but watermellon, honeydew and sometimes bananna too). It consists of a scratchy throat. My fiancee's father is allergic to high quantities of yeast. He starts itching and sometimes breaks out in hives no longer than 10 minutes after drinking some beers.
