Dry Hop Noob Question

First time dry hopping, my beer is in secondary in a carboy, I have pellets. Do you just dump them in? Will that make a mess of the beer? Or do they settle to the bottom? I have a LARGE strainer bag I could use I suppose, wish I had a small one, if I went the bag route just tie some fishing line? (All sanitized of course). Sorry this has probably been answerred many times but search is not working for me this morning and I want to do this tday. Thanks
