So I just put my first batch into the fermenter and away in my closet. The only thing that worries me is the S.G. was 1.087. Does that sound normal?
 
No, 1.087 is high for a brown ale. What was the recipe? Was it a partial boil with water added to the fermenter at the end to top off to a total volume of 5 gallons? If so, did you mix the wort and top off water thoroughly before taking your gravity reading?
