I just completed my first every extract boil, cool and yeast is pitched and lid is on plastic fermenting bucket. I have a bubble airlock, sanitized with a little water in it as a buffer. I've come to my first step where I'm confused (shocked I made it this far without confusion, BTW): my airlock came with a little plastic. Should I use it during fermentation? I can't decide.

Thanks for the help.

A little plastic what?

Oops. Plastic lid. It looks kind of like this:

Do I leave the red lid on?

Sure, pop it on there. It'll keep thirsty critters out of your airlock fluid.

Another tip for airlocks: You can use cheap vodka instead of water. Then if any gets in your beer, there's no worry of infection (unlikely though it may be in any case).

Thanks for the help. Looking forward to tasting my Extra Pale Ale.
