I have a friend that wants to sell me a 7 gal electric turkey fryer for homebrewing. I live in an apt and cant have propane so a normal turkey fryer is out. Has anyone used this or have any thoughts on it? It has a built in therm. and a drain spout.

if it heats up enough to fry a turkey it should heat up enough to boil water. might take longer to get hot enough.

The catch here is that the oil will become very hot as it is not losing neary as much heat as the water...when the water approaches boiling, steam is given off, and that loss of heat must be made up by the heating element. With oil, the heat is not "lost" as easily and will achieve much, much hotter temperatures.
