This might also fall into the noob category but i threw away the directions for brewing and im not sure how long i should keep this in secondary fermentation before bottling.

The HBT house response is don't put it in secondary to begin with, just leave it in primary the whole time. How long has it been since brew day? Don't bottle before two full weeks, and many would say it's best to wait four weeks.

well shes already in secondary because i needed to free up my fermentor so i can brew another one. I was just curious if it made a difference how long since its a brown ale compared to others.

It will clear over time, and for a brown ale that will help it look nice (it's not as dark as a stout). There's still yeast in it and it's working to condition your beer. Maybe two weeks secondary. Three wouldn't hurt.
