In my two lives as a homebrewer, I have never brewed a barleywine. I am about to brew a 3gal batch and bottle it in 1L swing cap bottles. I use 9gal HDPE containers for fermentation and have no glass carboys. I have not used a secondary in a while. Will these be too large for secondary of a 3gal batch? I'm concerned about head space and oxygen.

If it helps, you can get 3-gal Better Bottles for $20 each.

I'm about to lager a Kolsch in one of those. Started with 3.50 gals, will leave .25-.50 gals of trub in the primary and fill that sucker up to the neck.
