I was thinking about keeping an eye on craigslist over the winter to find a cheap small fridge that I could put one or two buckets in so that I don't have to worry about high fermentation temperatures next summer. I could even try something with a lager yeast if something evil were to possess me. I might even be able to save a few bucks and get an old temperature controller from work.

Will a freezer work just as well as a fridge with a temp controller? Should I look for a chest type with a lid on top? Any input from anyone else with a similar setup is greatly appreciated!:mug:

A freezer will work just fine. Pretty much anything that will fit your fermenter will work for an ale. For lagering, a freezer might have an easier time keeping the really low temps.
