I'm getting ready to make the leap from kits to my own recipe. I've wrote one up, but I livesome ways away from a LHBS. Any suggestions on a place to order general supplies on the cheap?

Yes. There are a lot of options out there, I've tried most of the big ones and they all have their merits.
Without trying to sound like a shill though, I've pretty much been ordering exclusively from Brewmasters Warehouse, using their brewbuilder. And now that you can save/share your recipes with everyone there's even more to love...

I'd like to try that too, except its 15 minutes down the street from me and for whatever reason, I can't get stuff from them. It sucks.

Same here...Love the site and prices are right but they can't deliver within state.

I love Brewmasters warehouse, but it takes 4-5 days for regular shipping to Arizona.

Where in NY are you? I am in NY also, and have had a bunch of stuff shipped. There are a few LHBS around. The closest to me is an hour away.

I'm in westchester county, just slightly north of NYC. Found an LHBS (small corner in the basement of a hardware store) that is good for last minute/things i forgot, but doesn't have a mill, and so bulk is difficult.

I grew up in Westchester County. Now I am in Putnam. When I was looking around for brew shops on line, I thought I saw one listed in White Plains. I have not checked it out though. I go to one up in Dutchess county because I work up there, but it is an hour away from my house. They are pretty well stocked though.

Unless you go local, I would recommend Brewmasters Warehouse as well as many of the other online shops b/c you cannot beat the 6.99 / 7.99 flat rate shipping.
