Lookin in northern brewer and other such web sites and othe such catalogs i can help but feel like i would be ripped off by purchasing kegging equipment through them. $140 for a 20# co2 cylinder? holy crap!!!
Where do you / have you found good prices on tanks regulators and such equipment? Should i look for a tank from a diffrent source like a welding supply or a fire extinguisher store?
I feel like a cheap SOB but money is TIGHT!

I get my tanks filled at a welding supply shop. He has 20 # tanks full of co2 for 90 bucks. I have also seen them on ebay (empty of course) for cheaper.

Swap meets for cylinders. A fresh hydro only costs $10 at the welding store. My current little tank was a CO2 fire extinguisher. The welding/gas supplier changed the top valve, presto- a dinky CO2 tank. We also have a larger (20#?) tank at my work shop (custom furniture) for running air tools on job sites. I think it cost $10 at a garage sale. Sometimes used, but full, tanks can be had for less than cost of a refill.

just spent the $ on a system.

4 empty refurb kegs from midwestsupplies.com (good price and cheap shipping for me you may not)

2 SS tower shanks from micromatic.com

SS 2 faucet tower acumetalfab.com

remainder of "everything" needed for a dual gauge/dual output 2 keg setup + sanitation & misc stuff from morebeer.com (cheapest overall and free shipping for 74lbs of stuff)

I'm going all SS on everything so I am building the 2 faucet tower myself.

CO2 used 5lb just inspected with new valve filled - cheap!!! (local welders shop)

not a cheap date from scratch anyway you look at it - I'd guess top end with everything needed + 4 refurb kegs around $400+ (w shipping) that would be top end looking fo the best prices. ADD fridge extra on top + beer

it's worth every penny IMO! every one!

Ebay for cornies & regulators, & faucets. A lot of air supply places will sell the C02 and let you just pay a deposit on the bottle. LHBS for fittings, home improvement store for hoses, and local classifieds for a used fridge. My whole system cost only a little more than just the CO2 cylinder you mentioned.

Just goty my 20# cylinder. It is a brand new alum. catalina. Only 88 bucks plus 10 dollars to ship. It even came with free letter stamping.
