Could you clarify? I couldn't read the whole thread but the last few pages, I like bands like Slipknot, We came as Romans, All the Remains, A day to Remember, Hopes Die last and In Flames. I have been listening to metal for 20 years has it changed absolutely but I don't know about ruining it.

Sure I can clarify or give my opinion at least.

I too like Slipknot, All that Remains and In Flames. However there are so many popular metal bands that I just cant stand only because of the vocalist. Too list a few Five Finger Death Punch, Lamb of God, Straight Line Stitch. Those are just the first ones that come to mind that I would buy every album if they were instrumentals. The last thing I want in my metal is some ****** blah blah blahing about some stupid crap.

Have you seen the Chris Adler drum clinic videos. Lamb of God with no singer. Yeah give me some of that.

Another good example of good metal with no vocals is Marc Rizzo's solo work.

I understand what you are saying, yes there are bands out there that I don't care for the singer. I guess I wasn't looking at it that way, if I have pandora on I'll just not pay to much attention to them that's all.

Yep, I read about that.... Varg Vikernes was much more metal about it... he stabbed that dude from Mayhem in the head, burned down some churches cuz they were built on traditional Pagan sites and I think he's still yet to find "god".

Yes, Varg actually stabbed Euronymous in the head, back and neck over 20 times, was tried and convicted of murder and spent about 15 years in prison on a 21 year sentence. At the time of the murder Varg and Euronymous were bandmates in the black metal band Mayhem, most of the church burnings occurred before the murder and Varg was also convicted of arson in connection with the Norwegian church burnings at the same trial.

Varg continued to release music and writings during his incarceration and continues to today under the Burzum band name. His religious beliefs, or lack thereof, are basically atheistic although somewhat skewed by paganism, racism and socialism.

The reason good metal is hard to find nowadays is because of the popularity of bands like slipknot which are commercialized to kids who really don't know what metal is to begin with. They hear a distorted guitar and a double bass kick and they immediately think they are hearing metal when more often than not they are simply hearing meaningless, commercialized garbage that is not really founded in any specific genre of music, just noise.

This is further evidenced by all the new sub-genres that the commercialized non-metal (wanna-be, poser) crowd keeps trying to push on metal. Nu, grind, goth, core... these are examples of sub-genres that are not, and never will be, metal. Or at least not to anyone who actually listens to metal and knows what they are hearing and/or talking about.

All that said, there's plenty of good, viable metal being released every day... You just have to look for it to find it.

Since they just popped up in my Pandora shuffle. From their bio....

Burzum is the one-man project of Varg Vikernes (born Christian Vikernes, aka Count Grishnackh), perhaps the most notorious figure in Norwegian black metal. Although Burzum had an unpredictably experimental bent -- encompassing black metal, industrial, electronic, and dark ambient music -- Vikernes will forever be associated with his conviction for the 1993 murder of former Mayhem bandmate Euronymous. It wasn't the first time Vikernes had run afoul of the law; he had been a suspect in arsons directed at historic Norwegian churches in Bergen, a perception not helped by his use of a post-fire photograph of the Fantoft Kirke church on the cover of Burzum's 1993 Aske EP. Coupled with Vikernes' racist, virulently anti-Judeo-Christian beliefs was a sort of nationalistic pride, a longing to return to the pre-Christian pagan culture and religion that had marked the glory days of the Vikings; this paganism became a frequently recurring theme in black metal circles, and led to the Norwegian metal sound being tagged Viking metal in some quarters.

This is the main problem with metal today. If you were to take a drummer, guitarist, or bassist and record them at 1 year of their instrument and then again 10 years later you would see significant improvement. A vocalist just doesn't seem all that talented and rarely improve their instrument. Lyrics are also a weak point. A song is like a mini story. I read the lyric sheets to a lot of metal songs (most times I cannot even make out what they are saying without reading this) and wonder what the heck the song is supposed to be about. This may also have something to do with the fact that most metal bands are now European and the vocalists carry a slight accent.

The audio mixes are also horrendous. It seems like a guitarist has his "tone" and will stick with it even though it doesn't completely jive with the rest of the band. Catchy riffs and hooks seem to be a thing of the past (I did enjoy checking out Tantara from the above list though).

I miss Slayer, Sepultura, Deicide, Metallica, Ac-DC, Pantera etc... I know some of my dislike for newer music may just be age, but I suspect its lack of talent as the rewards for being a musician have disappeared.

My most listened to album last year was Adele. Some things were close to being metal were Trivium, All that Remains, Adelitas Way, Shinedown, Airbourne, Evile, Foo Fighters, MAstasdon, Sick Puppies, Anthrax, Rev theory, Rise Against, In Flames, Volbeatm Smile Empty Soul, Atreyu, Avenged seven fold, Black Stone Cherry, Alter Bridge, Hellyeah, and Manimal.

It's funny, cuz the last thing I listen to in music is the vocals. If the music is working, I'm usually happy. Sure, I appreciate really good vocals and bad ones can really turn me off, but it's definitely not something I pick and choose by. When it comes to the musicianship, just one amazing or awful player can make or break a band for me.

I find 'poetic' lyrics to be one of the most important things about a song. It's fine if I'm just jamming to it while I work, but I also like to be able to listen to the same music on it's own and unravel the lyrics like a prosaic puzzle. One of the reasons I love Poets of the Fall on my non-metal days (which, admittedly, are few).

14) Kamelot - Silverthorn

Oh hells yes. :D Tommy Karevik was such a perfect fit for Kamelot, great stage presence live. Stepped into the role like a hand in a glove.

I still look back on the things Roy Khan did with them before he left and it blows my mind, though:

I really enjoy Karevik's work with Seventh Wonder, every bit as much as his work with Kamelot:

Neat, I was like "who the heck is Blood Feast?", but I must have listened to Chopping Block Blues repeatedly once upon a time because I knew all the songs very well.
