I was given an older model stirplate that a college used to use in a chemistry lab. It works okay for my needs, but after the first time i used it i realized that the motor is generating a lot of heat. I don't think it's meant to be 'heated' as there is no way of controlling the heat.

My first question is this, if the unit is getting hotter than my wort should (~100), should i be worried? Second, should i try to use something to insulate the heat away from the flask?

thanks

I got a store bought one also with a cast aluminum plate on it. It also feels a bit warm. Ive done 3 starters with it and no problems.

For the heck of it a placed a glass coffee pot carafe with water and a thermometer in to see how warm it gets to the ambient air, lets see what it does.
