Hey all-

I have a buddy in NJ that's getting ready to ship me some stuff and was going to have him put a few beers in there as well. Are there any east coast beers that he should be able to get in NJ, but have limited distribution out this way? Looking for stouts/IPA's/interesting unusal stuff, but am open to any input. Thanks for the help.

not sure about how far out these are distributed but here goes

Dogfish Head 60min IPA
Harpoon IPA
Woodstock Inn Pigs Ear Brown
Long Trail ale or pale ale
Smuttynose Big IPA (never had it but I've heard its good)
Brooklyn brewery black chocolate stout
Victory
Ommegang for some Belgian styles
Weyerbacher

Yeah attempt to get your hands on some Smuttynose. They make some really fine beers. There IIPA is excellent. And I am sure you can get your hands on some DFH but I would see if he could pick you up some of their rarities.

Bells and Great Lakes if he can get them in NJ. Bells Hopslam is a great IIPA. Their Two Hearted Ale is one of my favorite IPAs too.

anything from allagash and troegs nugget nectar before it runs out

I'm a big fan of River Horse, out of New Jersey. They had just started selling their Chocolate Oatmeal Stout out of the brewery when I was there a month or two ago, should be more widely available now. Their Hop Hazard and lager are pretty tasty as well.

The Heavy Seas beers from Clipper City brewing in Baltimore...some good beers there. I like their Loose Cannon IPA.

Edit: And anything from Great Lakes Brewing Company, Thirsty Dog or Hoppin' Frog in Ohio are pretty darn good, too.

Southern Tier from NY has some crazy beers. Not sure if you can get Unibroue in Colorado but those beer are unreal. Unfortunately for Great Lakes and Bell's you have to jump over the border to get these in PA. If he lives anywhere near central NJ have him go to the Buy Rite in South Plainfield. The selection is one of if not the best in the state.

There are also some great Southeastern breweries like Terrapin and Highland. Not sure if they are available in NJ though.

I second this and will add Sweetwater to that list. Highland brewery does make some stellar beer as well. Also Duck Rabbit, "The dark beer specialist" out of Farmville, N.C. I think their Milk Stout is better than Left Hands. The Duck Rabbit also has a Baltic Porter that is apparently rated the #1 Baltic Porter on ratebeer.com FWIW.

Terrapin's great stuff, but I've never seen it around here, nor have I seen Duck Rabbit. :-(

Troegs, Victory, High Point, and Climax are among my favorite local brewers, although Climax isn't in bottles per se, but growlers.

Great lakes is my goto when I go back to Ohio. If you want something that is really unique and that seems to be sweeping the northeast, get shipyard, geary's, or seadog. They're all ringwood breweries and are making great beer.

Everyone mentioned the obvious ones but I don't think I saw Flying Fish mentioned. They're a pretty good brewery in Cherry Hill.

If I have to second a few of them I'll second products from Sly Fox, Troegs, Victory, DFH(aren't those pretty widely available?), Clipper City, Smuttynose... just take a trip out here sometime ;)

Now sure how much of this is available in Jersey but here's a list of stuff I enjoy and can get readily in MA.

Smuttynose - Finest Kind IPA, Old Brown Dog, Robust Porter, Imperial Stout
Victory - Hop Devil, Hop Wallop
Pretty Things - Jack D'or Saison, Baby Tree Quad
Troegs - Hopback Amber, Nugget Nectar, Java Head Stout if there's still soem left on the shelves
Southern Tier - Unearthly, Oat
Mayflower - Porter, IPA
Long Trail - Long Trail Ale, Imperial Coffee Stout
Ipswich - Oatmeal Stout
Dogfish Head - 90 min IPA, India Brown Ale
Rock Art - Vermonster Barleywine, American Red Ale
Clipper City - Loose Cannon IPA
Ithica - Flower Power IPA, Cascazilla

MMMM..... to add and second to this growing list... I'm a hop freak too. As a care package I'd send (favorites underlined)

DFH: 90 minute and 60 min
Bells: Hopslam and Two Hearted
Southern Tier: Unearthly, Hoppe, Gemini (50/50 of the previous two) if you can find them - although I've noticed my last few lately Geminis had significantly reduced hop aromas than when they first came out
Long Trail: Long Trail Ale
Ithica - Flower Power IPA, Cascazilla
Victory: Hopdevil
Troegs: Nugget Nectar (if you can still get it), Hopback Amber
Legacy: Hoptimus Prime
Blue Point: Hoptical Illusion
Magic Hat: HI.P.A.

I can second alot of the ones already listed... In addition there are some good ones from VA, Dominion Oak Barrel stout and Legend Brown, anything from Southern Tier (the creme brulee stout was great), highland Gaelic, Weeping Radish black lager, Troegs Mad Elf (might be able to find a few left on the shelves somewhere - it was a holiday release)

Imported from the midwest I would suggest anything from Bells and New Holland's Mad Hatter.

There's a bunch of little breweries out this way that make some nice beers. Flying Dog from Frederick, MD, Troeg's from out around Harrisburg, Yards - one of my favorites - from right in Philly, and Philadelphia Brewing, Sly Fox from right outside Philly, Flying Fish from across the river in Cherry Hill and plenty more. New ones seem to open every week.

I would tell him to go out and buy a random assortment, you really can't go wrong.

Hey HBT people, thanks for all the input, this is what I recd:

Founders Red Rye PA
Founders Centennial IPA
Dogfish Red & White
Southern Tier Unearthly Oaked IIPA
Slyfox 113 IPA
Brooklyn Black Choc Stout
Troegs Nugget Nectar Iperial Amber
Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel Pechs Mortel

Where's the love for Ommegang out of Cooperstown, NY? Three Philosophers, Abbey Ale, Hennepin, Witte, Chocolate Indulgance, Rare Vos. These are some seriously good beers! I shared a bottle of 3 Philosophers (Belgian Quadruple Ale with a touch of cherry lambic, 9.8% ABV) with some Hungarian travelers the other day here in NYC. Never disappoints.

Terrapin's great stuff, but I've never seen it around here, nor have I seen Duck Rabbit. :-(

Troegs, Victory, High Point, and Climax are among my favorite local brewers, although Climax isn't in bottles per se, but growlers.

I have some Terrapin in the fridge right now. Good Stuff. Allagash white is awesome. Otter Creek makes some fine brews out of Vermont. I love their Kolsch. Smuttynose makes awesome stuff too. I like Climax's Helles.

There are also some great Southeastern breweries like Terrapin and Highland. Not sure if they are available in NJ though.

Terrapin are cool if you like to collect unique bottle labels too.

My suggestion for a beer to get would be Southern Tier. Try to get Gemini if they have it or Un-Earthly.

Edit: Ah just saw others put it on the list. At least I can affirm it's good beer.

Saw Weyerbacher earlier, go for their Merry Monks and Fireside Ale, excellent brews.

Also Victory, Dogfish Head, and Troegs are great too...
