i will be doing a 12 gallon batch this weekend but the fermenter i have is 15.5 gallons. is it ok th have that much extra room in the fermenter?

I believe so. I was always under the impression that fermenter head space didn't matter unless you were moving to a secondary, etc. Then you would want as little head space as possible. I didn't think it mattered in the primary. Could be wrong....

Shouldn't be a problem, the extra space will fill up with CO2.
