The problem with living where I do is there aren't any tobacco shops around. Well that's probably not completely true since I haven't really checked recently. I think the last time I bought tobacco locally it was at a mall store called John (something). Not bad, they have a few cigars and bulk pipe tobacco but no "specialty" tins. And no Frog Morton. Looks like internet shopping is going to be the win, again.

Instead of beer swaps we should start doing tobacco swaps!

Fixing to buy a pipe here. I'm interested in a churchwarden.. Been browsing the net. Also I never have "broken" in a pipe.

Czm, Breaking in a pipe. Somebody on this huge site could probably explain it scientifically but I'm no scienitist.

Virgin briar will not lend a lot of flavor to the smoke and can burn hot. As tobacco is smoked charred carbon layer will build, the "oil" for lack of a better word, will sink into the briar. The wood will be seasoned with the flavors of the tobacco smoked and as the layer builds these flavors build, the cooling qualities improve as the "cake" on the walls of the side build. Guys that smoke pipes on a regular basis actually have to clean out this cake. For me, on most of my pipes I'm still trying to build a cake (sounds weird) I have pipes from my dad's and uncle's collection, they were both serious pipe smokers. Their old pipes have a nice burn't cake and the bowls smell sweet. Those are the best smoking pipes I have.

Hope that makes a little sense. I'm typing between commercials and my daughter keeps calling me saying dad come here X-Factor is about to start up again.. X-factor. Not my favorite show to watch but it's some family time.

Right. Need to google proper steps to season. I've had a corn cob before. Smoked my own tobacco I grew. In fact I still have few lbs I grew and bought from over year ago ;).

Basics to breaking a pipe in is thirds. Pack the pipe a third the way full. Smoke it this way many times and a cake will build on the bottom part of the pipe. Next pack it 2/3rd's the way full and do the same, build the cake and then pack it full and smoke to build the top third.

Smoking a pipe and making beer have one common denominator - Patience! :mug:

I ordered: Roma Churchwarden Pipe - cwROMAthree Large - Billiard
From pipesandcigars.com, also ordered tobacco and some other odds and ends

That's actually a pretty good idea. An ounce or two of pipe tobacco shouldn't cost more than a postage stamp and envelope.

I'm up for a trade. PM me if you're interested.

How thick does the "cake" get? How will I notice that it's starting to take shape or has taken hold?

Also I wonder what would happen if we tried to mail a 1/2oz or so of tobacco across the border...

Another tip to building cake (I've nothing to add to Dans synopsis on seasoning) is, prior to cleaning out your pipe and best done after having smoked an entire bowl while the inside is still warm and a bit sticky from tar, place your thumb over the tobacco hole and shake the holy **** out of it.

The intent here is to get a layer of fine ash coating the inside of the bowl. That is what builds cake. Ash.

The ole exclusive pipe smokers would have to get their bowls reamed out periodically to remove the cake. So, it can get pretty thick.

You generally won't notice unless you smoke a LOT. Like daily, throughout the day, nothing but pipe smoking. And even then, you'll prolly notice it doesn't smoke as long before you'll actually notice the cake.

Also I wonder what would happen if we tried to mail a 1/2oz or so of tobacco across the border...

Prolly nothing for that small an amount. Worst case, they throw it away. My MIL would mail me cartons of cloves from Malaysia quite frequently until she learned you aren't supposed to do that.

You should eventually get it about the thickness of a dime. If starts getting too thick, more like a nickel in thickness, you can ream it down. I have so many pipes and smoke only a few times a week and it will take a LONG time before I will ever have to worry about reaming any of them. I did receive an old meerschaum from my father-in-law and he had let cake build up in it to the point of closing it off completely. I ended up having to take a Dremel to that and eventually get it all out of there.

Personally, I don't do the partial bowls thing to build cake, but it is a common technique. I just smoke the pipe gently for a while and, if it starts feeling too hot, I stop for a few minutes or slow down my pace.

This.

Ever see the video of how Grabow pre-season their bowls? They pack a full load into the pipe, hook it up to a vacuum, light it, and let it draw continuously until the tobacco is all used up.

What do you guys pay for an oz of tobacco? Here in socialist USSCanada it's like $20.

Holy crap! I just bought 2 for 2.99.

I think pipe tobacco is taxed lower in the US than cigars and cigarettes.

yknow what you could do to get around the issues of shipping... since tobacco isnt like homebrew (unless you have picked, cured, and or mixed it yourself) you could just say "hey, Im really enjoying this product" "ok, I'll buy some of that on saturday if you buy some of this"...

$8-12/oz? Where are you guys buying your tobacco? I just paid 1.75/oz for McBarren's loose leaf, 2.75/oz if shipping and tax is included. I always considered McBarrens decent tobacco. Is it considered drugstore stuff?

Of the three I recently bought, I could have gotten them online at about $9-$15 a tin. Double that for shipping, and then add taxation and it's basically the same. Also, I bought a couple Dan Tobacco products and those tend to be really high for some reason.

Dan Tobacco? Never heard of it so looked it up. I was going to ask if it's worth the price but if you're buying it I guess so.

I'll not give up my pipes but, I just ponied up for an eCig in hopes that I can get off the Marlboro's.

I like to smoke pipe but get nothing from it chemically. Meaning even after I've smoked a bowl I feel the desire to smoke a cigarette too.

YES! Blue Note is by far my most favored blend. This newer (to me) DaVinci blend is catching up.

I could smoke on those two and nothing else and be a happy man. If only I got enough Nicotine from pipe.

Black and Milds for the win! ;)

I think I'm blowing smoke out of my pipe. I just double checked my order, it was a 3.5 oz tin of MacBaren Virginia from Pipes and Cigar for 14.65. What arrived is 8 ounces of loose leaf Virginia #1. I was a bit dissappointed it was loose leaf because I ordered a tin. - Strike 1

But thought 8 oz is alot of tobacco for ~$15. I talked to a guy at the store and he said my 8 oz of loose leaf should be $19 (okay but I wanted a tin dmnd it) He said I could return at my cost and once they recieved it they'd send out the tin. Strike 2

No offer to send a new tin first with a free return shipping label. Strike 3

Maybe I'm being hard on them. But I wanted a tin! errgh!

There was a guy who recently came to my work to do replace a lock. I walked into the room he was working in and saw a cigarette in his mouth, looked at him oddly because everybody knows no smoking inside work spaces. He recognized the look I guess and said it was an eCig and so far so good. Nicotine without all the other crap.

Good luck!

No. It should have been, "Sorry, we screwed up. We will get that tin in the mail by tomorrow. Enjoy the other while you wait."

Got a churchwarden wizard, caramel apple tin, southern comfort samples, cleaning utensils, stand. 100 bucks.

The cake is supposed to kept at roughly the thickness of a dime. If it is too thick, the cake can expand under heat and crack the pipe.

Exactly! And they would have earned a loyal lifetime customer, instead of that they lost one.

This is slightly upsetting as I just created an account and placed my first order with these folks. Pipe, tobacco and other equipment are supposedly almost at the house. Here's hoping?
Any suggestions on other online vendors?

No suggestions at this time. This was a first I have ordered pipe tobacco online in a number of years.

I will say the tobacco they sent is nice, no doubt about it. I have eight ounces of MacBarens Virginia no 1. I was just very dissapointed they didn't send the tin even though the tin would have been less tobacco than they sent me. In some ways it worked out better for me. This is really silly, I was just stuck on a tin.

I'm sure you'll be happy and I'll probably give P&C another chance, maybe.

Let us know how your order turns out! I think you'll be happy.

ps.. for what it's worth. I have the virginia tobacco in my top dresser drawer. Everytime I open it a beautiful rich smell of tobacco comes through. (It's my other stuff besides clothes, drawer :) )
