Best. Brewery. Ever.

(hence the avatar!)

But seriously, I've never had a beer with more flavor & hoppy goodness than the stuff coming out of Stone. Their restaurant needs a little work, but the brews are consistently mind-blowing. If you have a chance, try their 13th Anniversary Ale. Looking forward to this years' Vertical Epic ale coming out tomorow as well...

One comment that stuck with me is that they are the fastest growing brewery..I hope they don't get so big that it affects the beers and they lose sight of what made them so good.

I like the restaurant. Good food, great atmosphere, very friendly and helpful staff. Our waitress brought me a bunch of free tastings, too.

Interesting. I'll look out for that episode as a re-run or online. I really like Stone in terms of creativity in their beers and business agenda. What they have done marketing wise has been amazing. Unfortunately, I feel that that they are already increasing production to a level that has had a negative impact on their products. Their more hoppy beers; ruination, 11th anniversary (or whatever it's called now), and their 13th anniversary I think have been hit particularly hard. All of the samples I've had over the last year or so have been very grainy, with an almost dirty hop taste. I think they may have found a cheaper hop pellet supplier, or maybe have switched from leaf to pellet. either way, I haven't been impressed lately. I still think they are one of the better breweries out there and one of the best in terms of what they have done, and are continuting to do to the popularity of craft beer.

sorry for the rant...

I think they've always used pellet hops. It could be a different supplier, or maybe just different weather conditions that had adverse effects on the crop.

Their beers are good ( and i've had many ) but, I think they are becoming to mainstream..but that is what they are shooting for.

I wish them nothing but continued success and gettiogn bigger doesn't necessarily mean sacrificing quality although it becomes more challenging to be as innovative on a larger scale.
They were clear that their continued vision are quality, hoppy, full flavored big bodied brews..
I also like the green aspect of the company using solar panels for power and sustainable food at their restaurant.

I wish they would get big enuff that they would start selling in Iowa. I got 2 case's of RIS when in cali. in july and its kinda pricey to get it back to iowa. I love that stuff best beer EVER.

+1
Ditto!!!

You sir, are my new best friend. :mug:

As for the commercialism aspect, I don't think they'd ever let themselves get to the level of sacrificing quality for quantity. I took their tour about 2 weeks ago, and from what the guy said, it's their mantra to produce quality stuff no matter the demand. I also spoke with one of the employees after the tour, and he said that if they ever give up that ideal would be the day he quits.

Yeah well money talks and bull$ht walk's. Hope you are right but the all mitey dollar is the point to many. God I wish I had an AG rite now mmmmmmmmmmmm

Stone is my brother's favorite brewery...he primarily drinks Arrogant Bastard. He also likes Port Brewing's Hop 15 (Port Brewing) which is very similar to drinking what would be the equivalent of hops extract mixed 50/50 with pure alcohol...but surprisingly drinkable :)

Not to cut down stone because i think their ris is good but do yourself a favor and get some bell's expedition stout. It's an ris at about 10.5 and it is exceptional! I don't believe it's released until this month sometime but it's awesome.

They have distribution here in GA so they are large enough to get to Iowa, must be something else. Sounds like a mission, good luck! :mug:

Warning.......RANT!!

What is the deal with so many HBT'ers being elitist chumps? Why, when a small craft brewery that we labeled as good becomes successful and grows, do we bash it and say they are commercialist sellouts? We did it with Sierra Nevada, we are doing it with DFH, and now Stone? C'mon guys. Just because they build new, larger breweries and land some success at getting their brews distributed further than just where they can take their vans, doesn't mean they have become Dick Cheney and Halliburton. They aren't going to invade a developing country for their natural resources!!!!

Their recipes have not changed, their beer is just as good as it has always been and remember guys -- recipes are scalable! Scarcity of ingredients is a fallacy. Even the hop shortage is pretty much over!

Ok, I feel better now.
Let the Stone bashing continue.......

I don't think anyone is really bashing them. They are just stating their concerns that it might happen. Personally I've only had a couple of their beers and they were ok. I'm sure I've had an Arrogant Bastard and a Stone IPA, but they weren't the best I've ever had.

I do like their attitude and only time will tell if they sell out, whatever that means.

I don't think that's what the "c" stands for in EAC :D

That's just the way this site is sometimes - I was looking for a longhammer clone recipe and stumbled on a thread where someone was doing the same and the thread basically turned into a RedHook bashing contest - until a mod came in, cleaned it up; and actually put together a recipe for me that came out quite good.

I saw Expedition on the shelves over the weekend...could be left over from last year, but the store doesn't have a big supply so I'd be surprised.

Agreed on Stone being a WORLD CLASS brewery. Those guys inspired me to start brewing, as did Sierra Nevada. They put out quality brews on a consistent basis...big body, big taste, lots of hops...those guys know how to go big and keep it balanced.

I went on the tour of Stone back in June during a visit to San Diego. We had lunch at the Bistro also. The food was good but expensive. The tour was very basic for the tourists. I would have liked more detail but that would have bored the others I'm sure. The free beer tasting at the end was the best. I discovered their Russian Imperial Stout. Damn, you can tar a road with that stuff. The tour guide was drinking a beer while he lead the tour ... my kind of gig!

Don't get me wrong, I am a Stone fan. Like i said, I think what they are doing as far as success and bringing craft beer to a larger audience is great. I just feel that some of their more recent beers have been sub par compared to their previous ones. Their 11th anniversary was one of my favorite beer, but for whatever reason, it just doesn't taste the same now. I get a more grassy, almost dirty taste with it, same as witht heir 13th. It's the same flavor I've noticed in my beers when dry hoping with pellets, which is why I attributed it to that. But I am still a fan and support them when I can. I mean, they did pretty much, put San Diego on the map for craft beer. Or at least made the sign bigger :)

I checked bell's site today and they don't relase expedition until november so it must be last years. If we had some near me i would snatch it up..it being left over would just make it better. Bell's claim is that it will get better for years. :mug:

I've been perusing their tasting notes for the Epic series, and it looks like the same issue with changing flavors keeps popping up (they taste each previous years' brew on the day the current year's brew gets released). Nice to know they're at interested in how well their stuff keeps.

Yeah the problem is Iowa they got to get there fingers in on that money so they have some screwy laws about beer. Up untill this year you couldn't get higher ABV beers in the store. I would either have to go to Il. or drive to a place up north 2hr and im not sure how he was getting them. Got to love John's grocery.

I haven't seen the bell's I will look to see if I can get it here in town thank's for the tip.
