Well I am going to order my second brew today or tomorrow. I want to brew some up this Saturday. I'm a little stuck on what kind of beer I should brew. The last beer I brewed was a Brown Ale. The brown ale turned out a bit more bitter than I expected, however it was still pretty good.

I like maltier beers / well balanced beers. Sometimes I can enjoy a Pale Ale, but not too frequently. What kind of beer would you guys recommend me brew for my second? I'm having a hard time trying to find a maltier/well balanced beer to brew. Would an English Bitter be a well balanced beer? I don't think I want a stout at this time, SWMBO doesn't like the roasted malts :)

Anyways, any help is appreciated!

Of my personal recipes, my favorite beer than leans to the malty is the Dead Guy Clone. Well balanced, but more towards the malt and not considered "hoppy" at all. It got good reviews in the beer swap!

An English bitter would be a good choice, as that is a misnomer, it's not really bitter. Another good choice might be an American Amber, like a Fat Tire clone, which is balanced and easy drinking.

How about a 60 or 80 schilling Scotch Ale? Both are malty but pretty well balanced.

Here is a 60 Schilling, 2.8% ABV, 14.4 IBU, and 15.77 SRM

0.19 lbs. English Chocolate Malt
0.19 lbs. Crystal Malt 20°L
3.60 lbs. Dry Amber Extract
0.6 oz. Goldings (Pellets, 5.00 %AA) boiled 60 min.
0.86 teaspoons irish moss
Yeast : WYeast 1728 Scottish Ale

Here is an 80 Schilling, a little more involved, 4.0% ABV, 19.7 IBU, & 13.3 SRM

0.13 lbs. American Chocolate Malt
0.25 lbs. Belgian Cara-Pils
0.25 lbs. German Dark Munich
0.06 lbs. Roasted Barley
0.25 lbs. Midwest Wheat Malt
5.04 lbs. Dry Light Extract
0.5 oz. Fuggle (Pellets, 4.75 %AA) boiled 60 min.
0.8 oz. East Kent Goldings (Pellets, 5.00 %AA) boiled 30 min.
0.5 oz. Progress (Pellets, 6.25 %AA) boiled 5 min.
0.13 pounds Biscuit Malt
Yeast : WYeast 1728 Scottish Ale

An English brown ale will give you a lot of maltiness (American Browns are often much more aggressively hopped). There are some really nice porters out there that are more on the malty side than roasty (even though they have a little bit of roastiness to them). Or, I'd concur with the American Amber idea.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I ended up choosing Yooper Chick's Dead Guy Clone recipe. However it is well noted for the other beers that you guys recommended. I needed to find more maltier beers to brew, thanks to all!
