Yes, you can use cane sugar as others have had success doing. I have not tried it but it is supposed to add more of a "cidery" flavor, which in this case would be a good thing.

It will contribute to the abv% and to the dryness. Cane sugar will add some undesirable flavors IMHO, but will work.
