Here's what a found when I pulled back the landscape fabric around my hops. These were planted in spring of 2009.
I think its time to give the crowns a trim.

Wow, very nice pictorial of what happens when you're not looking! Where did you get the fabric? Normally, that stuff is junk and am surprised they didn't poke through before now! Great pic!

The landscape fabric came from a local nursery. It's pretty hefty stuff.
Not the garbage they sell at Lowes or Home Depot.
 
Nice, I like to stick with the compost to help avoid any unexpected surprises. It also helps to do an annual pruning to keep too much running from happening. Will we see your new Rhizome website any time soon? Haha. Have fun!
