I have been wanting to pick up a refractometer for a while and am debating between two models. I have used the standard version at a buddies in the past and know that he is happy with it. I still plan on using a hydrometer for pre and post fermentation reading but it would be nice to take preboil readings and monitor fermentation easily. My buddy uses his pretty simply just multiplying the brix to get an approximate gravity for easy readings. I know that actual calculations are needed for an accurate conversion and there are spreadsheets for this. Does anyone have experience with the dual scale version? If its going to require calculations to adjust the specific gravity reading as well it is not worth paying twice as much, but if it could be calculated to be reasonably accurate It would be a nice feature.

I've got the dual scale version.

You still need to adjust with a correction factor to get the right reading.

Also, I actually find it harder to read than my original standard type one - mainly because there are two scales there and it's a bit harder to focus on just one.

What I've done is taken a bunch of readings of different colours and gravities to get a good spread of data. Had my mate plot this data into a graph in excel and output a formula. Then I used this formula to create a conversion table that I printed out and keep in my box with the refrac. Saves me running backwards and forwards to the computer all brew day.

Twice the price? Do you use software, (beersmith, etc.?), if so, those will do the conversion.

If not, print this out:

Call nice lady named Kathy at MISCO Refractometer in Cleveland, 800-358-1100 x-210 and ask her about the measurements directly in specific gravity. It's very easy to use and made in the USA.

So this one has only the specific gravity scale instead of dual? whats the price on this unit?

It has any two measurement scales you want, Call nice lady named Kathy at MISCO Refractometer in Cleveland, 800-358-1100 x-210.
