I would like to do an IPA, but am totally open for suggestions. No lagers though.
Ok, here is what I have in stock and would like to use most of it up. I am willing to get some other hops to finish off a recipe. Also, I can do a full 5 gallon boil.
6# Amber LME
3# Gold LME
8 oz Flaked Wheat, 8 oz Flaked oats, 8 oz Carapils, 8 oz Caramil 40
1 oz vangard 4.4%
2 oz german hallertau 4.4% & 0.5 oz german hallertau 5.8%
0.6 oz U.K. Kents Golding 4.8%

Thanks much. :mug:

Assumptions:

-All of your hops are pellets
-Caramil 40 is similar to Crystal 40
-6 gal boil to yield 5 gal

Recipe:

6.00 Amber Malt Extract Syrup
2.00 Light Malt Extract Syrup
0.50 CaraPils (steeped)
0.50 American Crystal 40L (steeped)

1 oz vanguard (60 min)
.5 oz german hallertau 5.8 AA (60 min)
.5 oz hallertau 4.4 AA (60 min)
.6 oz Goldings (60 min)
.5 oz hallertau 4.4 AA (15 min)
1 oz hallertau 4.4 AA (dry hop)

OG 1.059
FG 1.015
IBU 52
ABV 5.7%

Cheers!

I think the hop varieties that you have are slightly off for a IPA but it might make for an interesting brew if you use all those ingredients.

Are you looking for an English or American Style IPA?

Your fine with the Gold Extract if your using the Amber just use it in the last 15min of your boil it will help you with your hop utilization and it will keep your color more in range for the style.

English IPA you might want get some Fuggles and more Goldings (2oz ea) and Wyeast London Ale
American IPA cascade, amarillo, simcoe hops would all do good (3-4 oz)

With a full boil and late extract you can squeeze a few more IBUs out of your hops. Use most of them in the last 20min or less of the boil and keep .5 oz for some dry hopping in the secondary.

Just some thoughts from a rookie.

I built this recipe for you to look at it. You would have to buy 3 Oz of cascades to make it, if you wanted to go this route.

Thanks, I will look into getting some Cascade hops. Did you use beersmith software for the recipe?

Nice first post!! Recipe looks good to me

Thanks, I'm learning. In fact, I learned something here once I read all of the later posts. The later addition of the LME in order to pump up the OG made sense. I didn't realize that would affect hop utilization (of course now I understand). My idea was utilize only what he has and probably come up with a unique beer. The use of the Cascades will definitely make it more of a traditional American IPA.

Cheers!

I think this is what I am going to make.

I think this is what I am going to make.

How does the recipe look?

0.60 oz Goldings, East Kent [4.80 %] (Dry Hop 10 Hops -
1.00 oz Centennial plugs [9.50 %] (60 min) Hops 28.4 IBU
2.00 oz Hallertauer [4.40 %] (30 min) Hops 22.0 IBU
1.00 oz Vanguard [4.40 %] (15 min) Hops 7.1 IBU
1.00 oz Centennial plugs [9.50 %] (5 min) Hops 5.7 IBU
0.50 oz Hallertauer [5.80 %] (2 min) Hops 0.8 IBU

Looks like that would be an interesting beer. I think it looks good. I would want to dryhop a full ounce of something in order to pump up the aroma. I'm not terribly familiar with the aroma of Vanguard but it looks like you could switch it with the Goldings and not lose much on the IBU's. This is of course just a suggestion and entirely a matter of taste. Good luck!
