anybody try to brew a soba based ale like Rogue's Morimoto Soba Ale or Morimoto Black Obi? i love those beers. also where might one procure soba/buckwheat in non-noodle form, preferably pre-malted?

Buckwheat doesn't come malted, but it doesn't get malted either. It is treated like and adjunct and will require and adjunct mash to be used successfully.

Another trick would be to crack it and precook it to gelatinize the starches. Then do a mini mash with some 2-row. or add it to a full mash.

I just bought the rogue morimoto soba ale and mashed it like any other grains... The "how to" pamphlet didn't say anything otherwise for the buckwheat.

Edit: I do believe they were cracked though.

A clone recipe from member T-West:

WYeast American Ale (I got WYeast Northwestern Ale for my kit, a Pacman like yeast, Rogue's proprietary yeast.)
OG/ FG: 1.048/ 1.016 (soba has lots of unfermentables)
IBU: 30
12 SRM
5 Gal batch

3lbs Amber DME
1.5lbs Gold DME

Specialty:
.5lbs Pale 2-Row
.5lbs Munich
.5lbs Crystal 15L
1lb Buckwheat

1oz Crystal (60 min)
1oz Crystal (15 min)
no aromatic
