Found a CL steal for 30 bucks a guy was selling his whole new Brewers Best beginner set, this also came with an American Light kit. He said this is been sitting in the garage for almost a year now, the LME is in a can, and also has some DME that is still sealed but is hard as a rock. Hops are still sealed, and a packet of yeast. Are any of these ingredients still usable since they havent been refrigerated at all

Well dont' be so hasty.

There are some styles - notably Belgian ones - that use 'stale hops' as away of getting preservative quality without adding much bitterness or arroma

If the DME looks good - other than rock hard - it could be used for yeast starter. It probably will disolve just fine once it is in water.

The yeast proably is dead, the LME is also probably past any good.

Make the kit. Use fresh yeast (or pitch on a cake), and add some new hops.

The extract is just sugar. It will be darker, but it will be cheap beer too. You might be surprised by what you get.

Unless you intend to brew Lambics, the hops are dead!

Yeasties are dead, hops are less than prime, but I would make it with everything else. Had just fine results before with brick DME and ancient LME.

Its Cheap beer, cant be worse than drinking a bmc beer i say brew it (with new yeast of course) and see what you get!

What's the debate about? The American Light, with fresh ingredients, will be better than a bmc, so using the ingredients as-is (new yeast, though, not a pricey item so no loss there) will probsbly come out about the same as bmc-types. Just a thought. :) The DME is Pilsen Light (added with 15 minutes or so of boil left to help keep the color as light as possible), the LME is Briess Pilsen Light, you've got a half-pound of corn sugar, a bag of rice syrup solids. The hops are in two 1/2-oz foil packs, and the yeast is Nottingham...

I say, brew it up, get a new pack of the yeast of your choice (Notty is fine), put it in whatever brand/label bottles you want and lovers of bmc etc may not even know the difference.
