brewed a American Ale yesterday and dumped it on a cake of Nottingham I am glad I have started to use a blow off hose because less than 24hrs I i have a mess in the bottom of the ferment fridg. All will be good just amess to clean up

Good luck with the mess. I've been saved a few times by blowoff tubes - I just use them automatically now, switch them out for an airlock when things die down.

What size fermentor? What size batch?
I am surprised when I don't get a blowoff. I'm normally fermenting about 5.5 gallons in a 6.5 gallon carboy. Like Paps says, use a tube every time.
