I would just one of the "starred" recipes from the database. My advice is to stick to something simple like a blonde or pale ale with dry yeast. Good Luck!!

I think a simple brown ale is pretty excellent as a first AG brew, as (I find) they point out problems in my process fairly well. Something simple like:
8.5 lb pale malt
1 lb flaked barley
12 oz 60l
12oz chocolate malt

w/ 1oz of low-ish alpha hops of your choice at 60 (I use something I have around and target 30ibu's)

It is easy to hide a lot of mistakes behind lots of hops, so if you are looking to see where your process is having holdups, a malty, low-ish abv brew will set you in the right direction.

If your interest is simply on something that will turn out well even if the AG process gets wonky, brew an IPA.

(edited to correct base grain weight.)

Thanks for the advice. I just got home from the local brewing supplu store. He set me up with a pale ale.

Sg 1.052
10lbs two row
1lb car 60l

Heat to 160
Mash 154 1 hr
Mash out 168
Sparge 170
1 oz magnum 60min
1 oz cascade 15 min
1 oz each 1 min

Hope this sounds right

No, heat your strike water to like 165 or 170 to rest at 154. Add boiling water and stir like crazy to get to your mash out temp (I use the equations from Palmers on How to Brew - By John Palmer), then sparge with 170.

I would do 1 oz magnum at 60, 1 oz cascade at 15, and 2 oz of cascade at 1 min. Leave out the magnum at 1 min. Its a very clean bittering hop, not too common as an aroma hop.
